Tea is the universal home remedy for headaches, stomach aches and gas and other minor issues in the Caribbean home. But on the other hand, coffee is known as the universal pick-me-upper. And with so many variations: from iced coffee to lattes to frappuccinos, coffee is becoming an increasingly popular morning and daytime drink.
But which is actually healthier, coffee or tea?
Well according to doctors across the world, both coffee and tea have health benefits, and so it is up to you to look at the health benefits of each and decide which is your cup of tea…or coffee for that matter.
Health Benefits of Tea
- Tea contains antioxidants that prevent or reduce damage caused to the cells and body by oxidation/oxidative stress, which occurs when there’s an imbalance between free radical activity and antioxidant activity.
- Antioxidants may also reduce the risk of diseases such as heart disease and certain cancers.
- Tea has little to no caffeine. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system and gives us energy.
- Tea may help with digestive health. Tea helps to reduce inflammation especially in the stomach and aid in the digestion of food.
- Tea may help protect your bones. Due to the wide range of nutrients they contain, black and green tea are especially great for stimulating bone formation, helping to slow its breakdown, reducing the likelihood of brittle bone.
- Tea may help with weight loss. Drinking tea is said to be able to ward off cravings. Today, there are many women that consume herbal teas in hope of losing weight. Some of these teas aid in the detox process.
- Tea may also boost the immune system. Tea is also great for boosting the immune system and warding off illness, even the COVID-19 virus. Turmeric, ginger and peppermint teas are great for boosting the immune system.
Negatives of Tea
- Too much tea could result in a high intake of caffeine which could put a strain on the kidneys.
- Drinking too much tea may cause the teeth to become yellow, this is due to staining from herbal teas.
Health Benefits of Coffee
- Coffee energizes, It is why many persons grab a cup when they are tired. It gives them the needed energy to get going. Coffee is also believed to be so powerful and energizing, that it powers the brain and makes one smarter.
- Coffee may reduce the risk of Dementia. It could be due to its trait of energizing the brain, but research shows that coffee may reduce the likelihood of memory loss.
- Coffee can help you to lose weight as the caffeine it contains can boost your metabolic rate.
- Coffee is believed to lower the risk of liver conditions including fibrosis.
- Caffeine in coffee may also aid in reducing depression by blocking receptors in the brain from binding with a chemical (adenosine) that causes fatigue and depressed mood.
- According to the World Health Organization, coffee may prevent cancer. It may also, lower the risk of long-term heart failure.
Negatives of Drinking Coffee
- Drinking too much coffee may damage the kidney and cause kidney stones. Too much caffeine may also cause headaches, migraine, and high blood pressure.
- Some women may also have miscarriages due to too much caffeine.
- Coffee may cause insomnia and restlessness, especially if you drink it right before bedtime.
- Drinking way too much coffee could be fatal.-According to the BBC, “in 2017, a healthy teenager in the US state of South Carolina died from drinking several highly-caffeinated drinks too quickly, Davis Allen Cripe collapsed at a high school in April after drinking a McDonald’s latte, a large Mountain Dew soft drink and an energy drink in just under two hours. The 16-year-old died from a “caffeine-induced cardiac event causing a probable arrhythmia”.
